A Look At Some Possible Replacements For Gerald Green Who May Miss The Entire Season

Well this really sucks. Gerald Green is a ton of fun to watch, is a Houston native and pretty important to what the Rockets do and how they play. He averages around 20 minutes a night and has averaged 10 points a game through his two seasons in Houston and while that doesn’t seem like a lot, the fact that you can spot start him if you need to gives D’Antoni a plethora of options. He’s proven he can show up in the playoffs like he did with his second stint with the Celtics, and he’s the type of streaky shooter where he can get hot and then the next thing you know he’s made 6 threes and carried you to victory.

So now, the Rockets are in a bit of a pickle, Hopefully it’s not season ending but if it is, what should they do? They have Eric Gordon, Austin Rivers and Ben McLemore available at the SG spot, and then there’s always Chris Clemons to help with the bench scoring, but he’s only 5’9 so you can’t exactly expect him to guard wings like Green does. You could see more Danuel House Jr and maybe some Thabo Sefolosha but that’s not exactly blowing your dick away either.

The problem is, when you look at the free agent market for wings right now and it sure as shit ain’t pretty. RJ Hunter is out there and he has some experience in the HOU system, but he basically hasn’t played in the NBA in 4 seasons so he’s probably not an option. Jodie Meeks is a little old but he’s a vet who can knock down threes but probably won’t be an option. So who is out there? If the Rockets are going to look to the market for help, here are some legit options

Jamal Crawford

You want to replace Green’s scoring you may as well bring in one of the best bench players in league history. Jamal Crawford is a little long in the tooth there’s no denying that, but he dropped 51 just last year and can definitely still get you buckets and is currently sitting at home. Plus it lets him join a contender that has a good shot at a ring, and he deserves that.

Iman Shumpert

He’s a guy who the Rockets were interested in just last month, only he turned down their contract offer

maybe if Green is out for the year they’ll up that thing up and bring a guy back who played 20 games for the Rockets last year. Granted his didn’t shoot the ball all that well, but at least he’s a decent defender who will have some familiarity with what the Rockets do.

Jaron Blossomgame

He’s a 6’7 wing that the Rockets actually just picked up off waivers on Thursday and has a training camp invite and could snag one of their Two Way deals. You may remember him from his appearances with CLE last year, he’s a big bruising wing but he can’t really shoot.

Carmelo Anthony

Ha just kidding. Nobody and certainly not HOU is going to kick the tires on Melo again. You know he saw that Shams tweet and hit up his agent though just in case.

When you have the title hopes that the Rockets do, I don’t think you can rely heavily on someone like Ben McLemore. If Gerald is out for the year and the Rockets can use his roster spot, my vote is for Jamal Crawford, mostly because I want him back in the league getting buckets. Seriously though, with all the Morey shit and that distraction and then this Gerald Green news, the Rockets season is sure off to one hell of a start.
